Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Yangon – Bago - Kyaikhtiyo – Golden Rock (-, -, -)

Golden rockLeave around 08:30 from your hotel in Yangon by private car and guide and visit (if wanted) after an hour the war cemetery in Taukkyan in commemoration of the thousands Allied soldiers from the British Commonwealth in Myanmar.

We continue to Bago (about 1.5 hours’ drive) where we visit the Kha Khat Wain monastery – one of the biggest in the country. Bago used to be the capital of Mon kingdom in the former days.

On arrival in Kyaiktiyo basecamp (about 2 hours’ drive from Bago), check in to the hotel and we leave the main luggage and go up the hill by trucks serving mainly local pilgrims.

One of the most important pilgrimage sites for Myanmar Buddhist and maybe one of the strangest (or unbelievable) sites for foreign tourist: the Golden Rock (Kyaiktiyo Pagoda). A big rock with a small pagoda built on top of it, is balancing on the edge of a mountain and looks as if it could tumble into the ravine below at any moment (luckily some hairs of Buddha precisely placed in the pagoda prevent the rock from falling). The site can be reached after a short walk (1.5 hours) or a long walk (about 7 hours) and apparently taking the long route for 3 times in a lifetime will bring good luck. Surrounding the Golden Rock are numerous local teashops, rest places and monasteries as well as local souvenir shops (many of them offering traditional Myanmar medicine made off indigenous animals found by Kayin hunters living in the jungle in this region).

Spend the afternoon on the platform and then go down to Kin Pun basecamp by trucks and 10 minutes’ walk to your hotel.

Day 2: Kyaikhtiyo – Bago – Yangon (B, L , - )

Shwemawdaw Breakfast at the hotel.

Around 07:00 we will continue by private car and guide to a small town behind Bago. On arrival Bago around 09:00, meet with a local guide and start an active biking trip through the fields and visit village life along the old Dhammazedi road.

Village life along the old Dhammazedi road. - full day

An exciting day is ahead of us as we’re going to follow parts of the old Dhammazedi Road (used by former Bago kings to visit the Shwedagon Pagoda) and meet countryside communities, from farmers to village teachers. From Bago, we drive in about 1 hour towards Kawa where mountain bikes are ready for a trip through the country side to Ohn Ne. The bike trip is about 2.5 hours (29 km), partly unpaved, all flat road. We visit the beautiful monastery and continue by car to Thakala. Our host family is waiting for us in this small town to accompany us by bike, boat, motorbike or on foot (45 min) - depending on the season and the path conditions - to their community. Htee Tan village is a traditional village showcasing typical life: it has a village pond where water is collected during the raining season so the villagers have water to drink, wash, and cook during the dry season. There is a village school, a monastery that serves as a community centre, there is no electricity, no running water or even wells. A quiet community where people have been living for ages and stay together in good times and bad times. A family style lunch awaits us, followed by a stroll around the town. In the afternoon we continue by car towards Thongwa to visit the lively market before crossing the river and arrive in downtown Yangon.
