Sule Shangri-La Hotel Reopens in Yangon After More Than Four Years
Yangon, 9 August 2026 — Sule Shangri-La Hotel, one of Yangon’s best-known international hotels, has reopened after being closed for more than four years, according to hotel staff.
The hotel reportedly began reopening its operations in January 2026. Initially, the entire property did not resume operations, with only the food and beverage area on the ground floor opening daily from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm. Following further renovation and refurbishment works, the hotel has now reopened.
Located in the heart of downtown Yangon, Sule Shangri-La has long been a familiar name in the city’s hospitality landscape. The hotel has 466 guest rooms and was formerly known as Traders Hotel before being rebranded as Sule Shangri-La by the Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Group in 2014.
The hotel had been closed since January 2021, although the adjoining Sule Square Mall & Office and Shangri-La Residences continued operating during this period.

The reopening of a major international hotel is an encouraging development for Yangon’s tourism and hospitality sector after several challenging years.
While Myanmar’s tourism industry continues to face challenges and recovery will take time, developments such as this offer some hope that conditions are gradually improving and that greater opportunities may return to the sector.
